Group Exercise: Floor Check (Based on Dr. Tian Dayton's Psychodrama Method)
Purpose:
A floor check is a visual and embodied way to assess the group's emotional climate, promote self-awareness, and build connection. It helps participants externalize internal states by physically locating themselves in the room rather than just using words.
Step 1: Set the Scene
Explain to the group:
- "We're going to do a quick floor check to see where everyone is emotionally. This is a way to check in using our bodies and intuition, not just our minds."
- You can use sections of the room or use cards/papers with words (e.g., Grounded, Anxious, Hopeful, Disconnected, Curious, Angry).
- If you want a spectrum, you can use a continuum line (e.g., from Low Energy to High Energy or Disconnected to Connected).
Step 2: The Check-In
Invite members to physically place themselves where they currently "fit."
- Example: "Imagine this side of the room is feeling grounded and centered, and that side is feeling scattered or anxious. Go to where you are right now."
Once everyone's in place, ask:
- "What made you choose this spot?"
- "What do you notice about being here?"
- "What's it like seeing where others are standing?"
Encourage brief, authentic sharing—no cross-talk or analysis yet.
Step 3: Deepen the Process (Psychodramatic Expansion)
Use psychodrama techniques to bring the floor check to life:
-
Doubling: Offer empathic reflections to help participants access deeper feelings.
- Example: "I stand behind you and it might be: 'Part of me wants to move closer but I'm not ready yet.' Does that feel right?"
- Mirroring: Invite a participant to step out and observe their spot on the floor, noticing what it looks like from the outside.
- Role Reversal: Ask someone to stand in another person's spot and share what they imagine that person might be feeling (with permission).
Step 4: Integration
Bring the group back together. Ask:
- "What did you learn about yourself?"
- "What surprised you?"
- "How does it feel to be seen—and to see others—in this way?"
Clinical Notes:
- This is assessment and warm-up, not full psychodrama.
- It externalizes emotion, increases body awareness, and builds group cohesion.
- You can adapt it to any theme: trauma responses, relational patterns, recovery stages, etc.
Choose your size based on how you want to use them:
- Small (4 pictures per sheet) - Perfect for individual handouts
- Medium (2 pictures per sheet) - Great for group activities
- Large (1 picture per sheet) - Ideal for floor work and large group exercises
